Dental Bridges & Dentures
Our primary goal? Giving you confidence in a healthy outcome…
If a tooth is lost, over time this can affect how you bite together as the teeth next to the space are able to drift and lean into it. This can alter the bite and create food traps causing further decay and gum disease.
Therefore if a tooth is lost the ideal solution is to have a replacement to prevent this tooth movement occurring. There are three ways to replace missing teeth -dental implants, a fixed bridge or a removable partial denture.
Bridges can be used where there are one or more teeth to be replaced, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. Though in recent times they have been superceded by dental implant therapy due to the need for tooth preparation either side of the space for crowns.
Denture designs can offer an alternative solution to bridgework or dental implants. By working closely with our patients and skilled technicians we can recreate a smile long since lost. We are one of the few dental practices in Britain to offer BPS Dentures. Dentures can also be retained by dental implants to give maximum chewing efficiency and security.
Good oral hygiene care is “preventative dentistry”, maintaining a healthy mouth is the best way of avoiding dental treatment like fillings and extractions.
Prevention is better than cure – maintain your smile. It is gum disease and not tooth decay that is the major cause of tooth loss in adult patients. Bacteria thrive in any plaque and tartar on your teeth, producing harmful chemicals that irritate your gums and cause them to bleed; gums and bone break-down, eventually causing teeth to become loose. Therefore, regular professional removal of bacteria, plaque and tartar by the hygienist is essential to maintain a healthy mouth for life.
Hygiene visits remove the hard tartar that cannot be removed by brushing, while stains and discolouration from coffee, tea, cigarettes or red wine are removed by polishing your teeth one by one with special brushes and polishing paste. Excellent home care is crucial, so the hygienist will also show you proper brushing and flossing techniques and other options to clean between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. This will help you to keep your teeth and mouth in optimum condition.
Cosmetically, few people like the look of a silver / mercury filling as it can darken the tooth and is noticeable when a patient smiles. During chewing, forces on the filling can lead to cracks appearing in the surrounding tooth due to the lack of support from the filling.
White fillings are more aesthetically pleasing than the old amalgam fillings; our white “composite” material can be used to replace old fillings (an affordable way to really lift your smile) or for any new ones required. If the decay is not too serious, our clinicians will remove all the decay and restore the tooth with a white (tooth coloured) filling.
Decay occurs when the enamel and dentine of a tooth become softened by acid attacks from bacteria, producing a cavity (hole). Onlays and Inlays are used to rebuild a tooth that has fractured or where the area of damage is too large for a filling.
Root canal fillings are similar to an ordinary filling, due to the nerve and blood supply being infected the cleaning process involves the roots, which are also cleaned and then filled. This treatment can save a tooth, avoiding the need for an extraction.
Crowns are fitted to teeth that are very heavily decayed / filled, chipped or broken. Modern all porcelain crowns restore both the function and appearance of damaged teeth.
Crowns can also be all gold or a combination of both, each type of crown is best suited to different clinical situations. A crown could also be used for a number of other reasons – such as a tooth has undergone root canal therapy and therefore requires a crown to protect it. It may also be used to disguise and improve the cosmetic appearance of a heavily filled / discoloured tooth or to help hold a bridge or denture in place.
We are pleased to say that patients travel from around the Liverpool, Formby and Merseyside areas to have their teeth restored with Dental Crowns at Azure Dental
